What is SDA

Deposit Return System

The Deposit Return System (SDA) is an economic mechanism where consumers pay a deposit when purchasing a packaged beverage and receive it back when returning the empty packaging.

The system covers three types of packaging: PET bottles (plastic), metal cans (aluminium/tin) and glass bottles. The uniform deposit is the deposit value per package, regardless of material or volume.

SDA operates on the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) — producers and importers finance the collection and recycling of packaging they place on the market.

Consumer at return point

For Consumers

The process is simple: buy, drink, return, get your money back. No receipt or proof of purchase needed.

  • The deposit is automatically included in the price
  • Return at any point — not necessarily where you bought
  • Packaging must be empty and undamaged
  • Barcode must be visible (don't remove the label)
  • Get money back instantly — cash, voucher or card
  • You can return any number of packages at once
Retailer with collection point

For Retailers

Retailers play an essential role as collection points. They receive compensation and full logistic support.

  • Mandatory for stores > 200m² area
  • Voluntary for smaller stores (with compensation)
  • Collection equipment provided free or subsidized
  • Handling compensation per collected package
  • Scheduled pickup — no long-term storage needed
  • Staff training and informational materials
Registered producer

For Producers & Importers

Producers and importers of packaged beverages must register in the system and contribute financially to its operation.

  • Mandatory registration in the SDA registry
  • Contribution per package placed on the market
  • Quarterly volume reporting
  • Mandatory marking on packaging (SDA logo)
  • Online portal for reporting and payments
  • Compliance with EU Packaging Directive
Financial Flow

How the Deposit Flows

Follow the path of the deposit value through the system.

1

Producer applies the deposit

The producer/importer adds the deposit to the delivery price of the packaged product.

2

Retailer transfers the deposit

The retailer includes the deposit in the final shelf price, visible on the label and receipt.

3

Consumer pays the deposit

At checkout, the consumer pays the product price + deposit value (shown separately on the receipt).

4

Return and refund

When returning the packaging, the consumer gets back the deposit value. Eco-Ret reimburses the retailer.
